**WASHINGTON D.C.** – Despite a decisive victory in last week’s presidential debate, Vice President Kamala Harris has failed to gain significant ground in the 2024 election, according to a new ABC News/Ipsos poll. While 58% of Americans believe Harris won the debate against President Donald Trump, the poll found no meaningful change in voter preferences, with Harris maintaining a slight lead over Trump.
The poll, conducted among 3,276 adults, reveals that Harris did manage to solidify some of her personal appeal, with 37% of respondents indicating they viewed her more favorably after the debate. In contrast, Trump’s image took a hit, with nearly twice as many respondents saying the debate made them view him less favorably.
However, the poll also highlights the deep political divisions in the country. The majority of voters have already made up their minds, with only 3% potentially open to switching their preference between Harris and Trump.
The lack of movement in vote preferences suggests that both campaigns will need to focus on mobilizing their existing supporters rather than trying to persuade undecided voters. Harris holds an advantage among women, younger voters, and independent voters, while Trump continues to hold strong support among white evangelicals and those without a four-year college degree.
While Taylor Swift’s endorsement of Harris received considerable attention, it had little impact on voter preferences. Only 6% of respondents said the endorsement made them more likely to vote for Harris, while 13% said it made them less likely to do so.
The poll also found that economic issues continue to dominate the election, with Trump leading Harris in trust to handle inflation and the economy. Harris, however, holds an edge in trust to handle issues like protecting American democracy and healthcare.
The poll results underscore the challenge both campaigns face in trying to win over voters in a deeply polarized political landscape. With the election just months away, the focus will likely remain on mobilizing base voters and emphasizing key issues that resonate with specific demographics.
