Great Britain achieved an unprecedented feat at the Kayak Cross World Cup in Ivrea, Italy, by securing four medals, including two golds, in a single event.
Mallory Franklin, the 2022 overall World Cup kayak cross champion, led the charge, claiming gold in the women’s final after a close race with teammate Kimberley Woods. Woods took silver, while Australia’s Olympic champion Noemie Fox finished third.
“It was a real battle with Kim,” said Franklin, “I had to fight, but to get ahead was really nice and to come away winning it is obviously amazing.”
The men’s final saw a dramatic finish as Jonny Dickson, after a late charge, capitalized on a collision between teammate Sam Leaver and France’s Gael Adisson. Dickson secured the gold medal, with Leaver taking bronze and Adisson silver.
“I think in that final I knew I had a pretty good chance because anything can happen,” Dickson said. “I went from third to first in the last gate.”
This historic performance marks the first time Great Britain has ever won four kayak cross medals in a single World Cup competition. Woods’ silver in the women’s final also solidified her position at the top of the overall women’s standings, with only one round of the World Cup series remaining.
