Sun Sep 15 10:15:21 UTC 2024: ## Baby Pygmy Hippo Goes Viral, Sparks Conservation Efforts in Thailand

**Chon Buri, Thailand:** A two-month-old pygmy hippopotamus named Moo Deng has become an internet sensation, capturing hearts worldwide with her adorable antics. Videos of the pint-sized creature, posted on TikTok and Instagram by her handlers at Khao Kheow Open Zoo, have garnered millions of views, turning her into a viral star.

Moo Deng’s playful personality and cheeky expressions have not only entertained the internet but have also driven a surge in visitor numbers to the zoo. Fans have flocked to witness her charm firsthand, with some even waking up at 5:00 am to make the two-hour journey from Bangkok.

This newfound fame has brought attention to the plight of the endangered pygmy hippopotamus. Native to West Africa, the species is facing threats from logging, mining, and poaching, with only 2,000 to 2,500 individuals remaining in the wild. Zoo officials hope Moo Deng’s popularity will raise awareness and spark conservation efforts.

“With more and more images of pygmy hippos online, more people fell in love with them,” said Atthapon Nundee, Moo Deng’s caretaker and social media manager. “They are poached in the wild, so with more people caring about them, it might prevent their poaching.”

While social media can play a positive role in raising awareness for endangered species, it can also lead to negative consequences, such as increased exploitation. Zoo management is using the increased revenue from visitor numbers to improve Moo Deng’s enclosure and fund public awareness campaigns about the importance of conservation. They are also planning to launch a line of Moo Deng merchandise next month.

“Zoos have a duty to lead in wildlife conservation outside natural habitats,” said zoo director Narongwit ‘Wit’ Chodchoy. “So it’s our mission to perpetuate the species for as long as possible.”

Moo Deng’s story shows how social media can be a powerful tool for conservation, bringing attention to endangered species and sparking action to protect them. With her infectious charm and growing fan base, this baby hippo is proving to be a powerful advocate for her species and a reminder of the importance of protecting wildlife.
