Sun Sep 15 14:49:00 UTC 2024: ## Mercedes Secure Podium Finish in Azerbaijan Despite Challenging Race
**Baku, Azerbaijan -** George Russell delivered a strong performance to secure third place for Mercedes in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, while Lewis Hamilton battled through the field to claim ninth.
Russell, starting from fifth on the Medium tyre, struggled with rear tyre temperatures during the first stint. However, he managed to stay within the top six before capitalizing on the chaotic finish. A collision between Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez sent both drivers into the wall, promoting Russell to third place.
Hamilton, who started from the pit lane after taking a new power unit, also experienced difficulty with tyre overheating. Despite his efforts to move through the pack, he was held up by rookie Franco Colapinto and ultimately finished ninth.
Team Principal Toto Wolff acknowledged that the podium finish was a positive outcome, but emphasized the team’s need to improve performance. He highlighted Russell’s strong second stint on the Hard tyres, while acknowledging Hamilton’s struggles with traffic.
“We will take the positive from today that we were able to get one car on the podium,” said Wolff. “We will analyze the race and weekend as a whole. The second half of our Grand Prix on the Hard tyre was encouraging.”
The team now looks forward to the Singapore Grand Prix, where they will celebrate PETRONAS’ 50th anniversary.
“We’ve got some upgrades coming before the end of the year so hopefully we can make a step closer to those at the front soon,” Hamilton commented.
The race was filled with drama, including the late collision between Sainz and Perez and a puncture for Nico Hulkenberg. Mercedes will be eager to analyze the data from this weekend and improve their performance in Singapore.
