Australian driver Oscar Piastri secured his second Formula One victory of the season in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, holding off Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc to claim the checkered flag. The McLaren driver made a decisive move on lap 20, passing Leclerc for the lead and ultimately coasting to victory after a late-race crash involving Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez.
Piastri’s impressive performance was praised by many, with Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid even calling him a “future world champion.” However, the spotlight was not shared by his McLaren teammate, Lando Norris, who suffered a major setback in qualifying. He failed to advance past the first round, starting from 16th place and finishing fourth, missing a significant opportunity to close the gap on championship leader Max Verstappen.
Verstappen, who finished fifth after a less than ideal race, now holds a commanding 62-point lead over Norris. Lewis Hamilton, starting from the pit lane due to a technical issue, ended up in ninth place and was unable to factor into the race’s outcome.
The Azerbaijan Grand Prix concluded with a bittersweet result for McLaren. While Piastri showcased his racing prowess with a dominant win, Norris’ qualifying struggles significantly hampered his championship hopes. The next race, the Singapore Grand Prix, offers a glimmer of hope for Norris to potentially trim Verstappen’s lead at a track where the reigning champion has never won.
