Sat Sep 14 18:57:27 UTC 2024: ## Leclerc Secures Fourth Consecutive Pole in Baku, Norris’ Title Hopes Dented by Yellow Flag Incident
**Baku, Azerbaijan** – Charles Leclerc dominated qualifying for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, claiming his fourth consecutive pole position at the Baku City Circuit. The Ferrari driver’s impressive performance was further enhanced by the fact that it marks his fourth consecutive pole at the same venue, a feat achieved only previously by Michael Schumacher at Barcelona, Suzuka, and Sepang.
However, Leclerc’s teammate, Carlos Sainz Jr., could not match his pace, finishing third behind McLaren’s Oscar Piastri who secured a well-deserved second place.
McLaren’s Lando Norris, who was looking to close the gap on championship leader Max Verstappen, suffered a setback during qualifying. A yellow flag waved on his final lap in Q1 due to a slow Pierre Gasly, forcing Norris to abandon his attempt and qualify a disappointing 17th. The team expressed concern over the necessity of the yellow flag, which could have serious implications for Norris’ championship hopes.
Verstappen, who started sixth on the grid, is looking to extend his championship lead. However, he faces a challenging race ahead after experiencing a difficult Q3 session. Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, who will start fourth, was the team’s top performer in qualifying, outperforming Verstappen for the first time since Miami last year.
The qualifying session also saw a few incidents. Alex Albon was investigated for an unsafe release after having to stop and remove his airbox fan. Gasly’s car exceeded the instantaneous fuel mass flow limit, potentially resulting in him starting from the back of the grid.
Sunday’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix promises an exciting race with Leclerc seeking his first win at Baku, and Norris facing a tough battle to recover from his poor qualifying position. Verstappen, despite his lackluster Q3 performance, remains the favourite to win and extend his championship lead.
