**New Delhi:** The Delhi Police have filed an FIR against unidentified individuals who violated the city’s firecracker ban by bursting crackers outside Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence on Friday evening. The incident occurred as Kejriwal returned home after being released from Tihar jail.
The FIR was registered under Section 223 (Disobedience to orders promulgated by public servant) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Civil Lines police station. It stems from a complaint filed by Sub-Inspector Tarun Kumar, who witnessed the violation while returning from a court hearing.
The Delhi government had imposed a complete ban on the production, sale, and use of firecrackers in the national capital until January 1, 2024, citing concerns over air pollution during the winter months. The ban was enforced through a joint action plan involving the Delhi Police, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), and the revenue department.
The BJP criticized the incident, calling the Delhi government’s policies “two-faced” and politically motivated. Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva questioned the timing of the ban, alleging it was a ploy to suppress celebrations while allowing for selective exceptions.
An AAP spokesperson, however, defended the actions of the crowd, stating that the public was expressing their joy and excitement over the release of their “favourite leader.”
The incident has sparked debate on the enforcement of the firecracker ban and the Delhi government’s commitment to addressing air pollution concerns. The police investigation is ongoing to identify those responsible for the violation.
