**New Delhi:** The Congress party has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of neglecting the crisis in Manipur, criticizing his continued focus on travel within India and abroad while “studiously avoiding” a visit to the violence-stricken state.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh highlighted the ongoing suffering in Manipur, stating that the violence has continued unabated since May 3, 2023, when the state erupted in clashes. He further pointed out that the three-member Commission of Inquiry, set up in June 2023 to investigate the causes of the violence, has yet to submit a report despite being given an extended deadline until November 24, 2024.
Ramesh’s remarks come a day after the Centre granted the Commission an extension, despite the fact that over 220 people have lost their lives and thousands have been displaced in the ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities.
The Congress party’s criticism underscores the ongoing political pressure on the Modi government to address the situation in Manipur effectively.
