Baku, Azerbaijan – Lando Norris’s world championship aspirations took a major blow in qualifying for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, with the British driver finding himself starting 16th on the grid after a controversial yellow flag incident. Meanwhile, Charles Leclerc secured a dominant pole position for Ferrari, his fourth in a row at the Baku circuit, setting him up for a potential victory.
The qualifying session saw Norris eliminated in Q1 after a gamble by McLaren to not run new tires backfired. He was then caught out by a late yellow flag for Esteban Ocon, who was subsequently disqualified for a fuel flow regulation breach. McLaren expressed their displeasure with the FIA, claiming the yellow flag was displayed unnecessarily and cost Norris a chance to advance.
The incident further widened the gap between Norris and championship leader Max Verstappen, who finished sixth but still holds a comfortable 62-point lead with eight races remaining. Verstappen is expected to benefit from teammate Sergio Perez, who finished fourth and is expected to support the Dutchman’s title bid.
Leclerc’s pole position, however, overshadowed the drama surrounding Norris. The Monegasque driver delivered a masterclass performance, outpacing teammate Carlos Sainz and Oscar Piastri by a significant margin. Leclerc is confident he can convert his pole into his first Baku victory.
Other notable performances in qualifying saw George Russell and Lewis Hamilton secure fifth and seventh for Mercedes, while Fernando Alonso finished eighth for Aston Martin. Williams’ Alex Albon was unlucky, experiencing a cooling fan failure that forced him to retire in 10th, prompting an FIA investigation into an unsafe release.
The race promises to be exciting, with Norris facing an uphill battle from the back of the grid, while Leclerc looks set to extend his winning streak. Verstappen will be aiming to increase his championship lead, with the support of Perez, while Piastri will be tasked with minimizing the damage for McLaren.
