Sat Sep 14 06:35:50 UTC 2024: ## Villagers Brutally Kill Protected Python, Four Arrested in Odisha

**Baripada, Odisha:** A disturbing video of villagers brutally beating a 10-foot Indian Rock Python to death has sparked outrage and led to arrests in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district. The incident occurred in Kuliana block, Deuli range, and came to light after the video went viral on social media.

The footage shows villagers mercilessly attacking the python with a sickle, with one even dragging the reptile along the road. While the motive behind the killing remains unclear, the Indian Rock Python is listed under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, granting it the same level of protection as the Asian Elephant.

Killing a Schedule I species carries a hefty penalty, including imprisonment for three to seven years and a fine of at least ₹25,000. Despite the strict regulations, the incident highlights the ongoing conflict between humans and wildlife, fueled by fear and lack of awareness regarding protected species.

Following the viral video, the Baripada Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), A Uma Mahesh, confirmed the arrests of four individuals involved. “All persons involved in this heinous crime will be taken to task as per the guidelines of the Wildlife Protection Act,” said the DFO. Further investigation is underway.

The incident underscores the need for increased awareness and enforcement of wildlife protection laws to prevent similar tragedies. Experts emphasize the importance of educating local communities about the value of these endangered species and the consequences of harming them.
