Fri Sep 13 10:16:00 UTC 2024: ## Building Manager Criticized for Failing to Support Residents After Devastating Chadwell Heath Fire
**Barking and Dagenham Council has criticized Block Management UK Ltd for its lack of support to residents following a fire that ravaged the Spectrum Building in Chadwell Heath last month.**
The fire, which made national headlines, erupted in the early hours of August 26th, forcing over 80 people to evacuate the Freshwater Road flat block. While the council has been providing emergency accommodation and support to residents, they claim that the building manager has yet to meet with those affected.
“This is a private block and no council tenants were living there,” a council spokesperson said. “Block Management UK Ltd manage the building and they have a moral duty to support residents.”
Residents have expressed concerns about their housing arrangements, as hotel bookings begin to expire. Some have been moved to longer-term accommodation, while others remain in temporary housing.
The council has set up a community assistance center to help residents with housing, food vouchers, and replacement documents. They are also providing support online and by phone.
When questioned about the criticisms, Block Management UK Ltd responded by stating they are working with relevant parties to provide support. However, they did not address the claim that they haven’t visited residents.
MP Margaret Mullane, who represents Dagenham and Rainham, raised the issue in the House of Commons this week, highlighting the hardship faced by residents whose lives have been turned upside down.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the London Fire Brigade and Metropolitan Police.
