Labour’s Shadow Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, has been accused of hypocrisy after it was revealed she claimed £3,700 towards heating her second home over the past five years. This comes at a time when Labour is proposing to means-test the £300 winter heating payment for pensioners, effectively cutting it off for millions.
Carole Malone, a commentator for GB News, criticized Reeves for claiming the heating allowance while simultaneously supporting the government’s decision to restrict the winter fuel payment. Malone argued that Reeves’ household income, combined with her husband’s earnings, totaled nearly £300,000, while many pensioners rely on just £10,500 per year.
“It makes me boil with rage that they can’t see the hypocrisy of this. They can’t see the cruelty of this,” said Malone.
Reeves defended her actions, stating that being an MP requires maintaining a residence in London as well as their constituency. She emphasized that her priority is to protect the most vulnerable pensioners by ensuring they continue receiving the winter fuel payment.
However, critics argue that Reeves’ actions are contradictory. Simon Francis, of the End Fuel Poverty Coalition, stated, “As MPs warm themselves at public expense, the reality for pensioners will be very different this winter.” He suggested that if Labour is serious about saving money, they should look closer to home instead of targeting vulnerable pensioners.
Data shows that in 2021-22, 11 Cabinet ministers claimed a total of £7,187 for their gas and electricity bills, an amount that increased to £12,620 during the first three quarters of the following year.
The revelation of Reeves’ claims has sparked controversy and further intensified the debate surrounding the government’s proposed cuts to the winter fuel payment. Critics argue that the move is unfair and will disproportionately impact the poorest and most vulnerable members of society.
