**LONDON** – Labour Party Leader Sir Keir Starmer has refused to rule out scrapping the 25% single-person council tax discount, a move that could significantly impact those living alone, particularly pensioners.
While questioned about the potential consequences for elderly Britons already affected by the loss of winter fuel payments, Sir Keir dismissed the assertion that this would be a “punishment beating” for pensioners. He insisted that “we’ve got to look at everything in the round” when considering the nation’s public finances ahead of the upcoming Budget on October 30th.
The Local Government Association, which represents councils, has advocated for the flexibility to vary the single person discount, which amounts to £3 billion annually.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has also declined to comment on the future of the tax break, highlighting that the Chancellor’s budget statement will reveal the government’s plans.
Sir Keir’s reluctance to explicitly rule out scrapping the discount has fueled speculation, as he previously declined to comment on other potential cost-saving measures such as scrapping free bus passes, TV licenses and prescriptions.
The looming budget decision raises concerns about the potential impact on vulnerable individuals, particularly those living alone, who may face increased financial strain.
