Fri Sep 13 21:56:00 UTC 2024: ## Minnesota Secretary of State Urges High Voter Turnout, Low Drama Ahead of Election

**GRANITE FALLS, MN** – With less than two months until Election Day, Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon is calling for a high voter turnout and a peaceful, drama-free election.

During a visit to Granite Falls as part of his ongoing tour of Minnesota counties, Simon emphasized the importance of civic engagement and warned against the dangers of disinformation.

“I like to say we are in the democracy business,” said Simon. “It’s one heck of a time to be in the democracy business.”

Simon expressed concern about the spread of disinformation, citing a recent incident where a chatbot on X, formerly Twitter, provided inaccurate information regarding the election process. He stressed the importance of transparency and collaboration with local officials to combat misinformation.

“Minnesota has good laws that protect election integrity,” Simon said. “We are committed to ensuring a fair and secure election.”

He also highlighted the state’s proactive measures to prevent voter fraud, including database checks for ineligible voters and a new law banning deep fake audio and visual materials.

Simon encouraged Minnesota to lead the nation in voter turnout, as it has done in recent elections. He pointed out that early voting begins on September 20 and voters can choose to vote in person, by mail, or with an absentee ballot.

Looking ahead, Simon said he would like to see reforms that strengthen post-election audits, improve voting access on tribal lands, and create a centralized platform for candidates to share their positions on issues.

“We need to make sure everyone has a voice and understands the importance of their vote,” Simon said.

With the election fast approaching, Simon remains optimistic about the future of democracy, despite the challenges. He emphasized the importance of engaging in constructive dialogue and participating in the democratic process.

“Does democracy feel a little bit dinged and defeated in the last few years? I would say yes, but we’re nowhere close to defeated,” Simon said.
