Fri Sep 13 13:15:56 UTC 2024: ## Foster Care Event Aims to Recruit and Support Parents in LaGrange
**LaGrange, GA** – Amerigroup Georgia and the Foster Care Institute are partnering to host a free event on Saturday, September 14th, aimed at recruiting new foster parents and providing support to existing ones. The event, taking place at 3683 Whitesville Road in LaGrange from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., will offer training, door prizes, gifts, and a free lunch.
According to Dr. John DeGarmo of the Foster Care Institute, the event is a crucial step in addressing the growing crisis in foster care. “We’re seeing a significant increase in the number of children entering the system, and many existing foster parents are experiencing burnout,” said DeGarmo. “This event is a chance to offer support and resources to those who are already dedicated to caring for these children, and to encourage others to join the effort.”
DeGarmo highlighted the challenges faced by foster parents, citing the mental health crisis impacting children and the opioid epidemic as major contributing factors to the surge in foster care placements. He also emphasized the strain on caseworkers, who are often overwhelmed and unable to provide adequate support to foster families. “The average foster parent lasts about 18 months before they burn out,” said DeGarmo. “We need to change that. We need to create a system that provides the support these dedicated individuals deserve.”
The event is open to the public and encourages anyone interested in learning more about foster care to attend. For more information, contact Dr. DeGarmo at (706) 318-9225.
