Fri Sep 13 00:36:00 UTC 2024: ## Czech Republic Braces for Devastating Floods as Heavy Rains Loom
**Prague, Czech Republic** – The Czech Republic is on high alert as a low-pressure system threatens to bring heavy rains and potential floods across the country this weekend. Authorities are taking preventative measures, including erecting barriers, releasing water from dams, and warning residents to prepare for potential evacuations.
Prime Minister Petr Fiala stressed the seriousness of the situation, stating, “We have to be ready for the worst-case scenarios. A tough weekend is ahead of us.”
Meteorologists predict the heaviest rainfall in the eastern half of the country, particularly the Jeseniky mountains. The city of Brno, which lacks flood protection work unlike Prague, is particularly vulnerable. Authorities have asked citizens to avoid parks and woods due to strong winds reaching speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour.
The impending weather event has stirred memories of the devastating 1997 floods, which claimed over 100 lives, including 50 in the eastern Czech Republic.
Neighboring countries are also preparing for the storm. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk visited Wrocław, a city facing flood risks, urging residents to stock up on food and prepare for power outages. While acknowledging the severity of the situation, he stressed, “There is no reason to panic, but there is a reason to be fully mobilized.”
Germany and Austria are also bracing for heavy precipitation and snowfall, with the German Weather Service issuing warnings across the country.
The impending storm follows an exceptionally hot summer across the region, a trend that scientists attribute to human-caused climate change. A hotter atmosphere can lead to more intense rainfall, raising concerns about the potential severity of the upcoming floods.
