**Paris, France** – New Zealand Paralympian Danielle Aitchison has started her Paris 2024 Paralympic Games campaign with a bang, setting a new Paralympic record in the Women’s 200m T36.

Aitchison, who holds the world record in the event, clocked a time of 28.21 seconds in her heat, surpassing the previous record by 0.10 seconds. This victory secured her a place in the final, which will take place later today.

Aitchison’s dominance in the event is not new. She made her international debut at the Dubai 2019 Para Athletics World Championships, where she won silver in the Women’s 200m T36. She followed this with silver and bronze medals in the Women’s 200m T36 and Women’s 100m T36 respectively, at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

Aitchison’s performance is just one highlight for the New Zealand Paralympic Team, which is participating in eight Para sports at the Games. The team, known for its consistent success on the world stage, placed fourth in the world per capita at the Tokyo 2020 Games.

The NZ Paralympic Team is committed to challenging perceptions towards disability and showcasing the achievements of high-performance athletes. The team has a rich history, having competed in 26 Paralympic Games since 1968, winning a total of 236 medals.
