Thu Sep 12 08:07:00 UTC 2024: ## York Valkyrie Secure Hard-Fought Victory Over Wigan, But Injuries Take Their Toll

**York, England -** The York Valkyrie secured a crucial 16-12 victory over their rivals, Wigan Warriors, in a physically demanding match played in treacherous conditions. The win propelled the Valkyrie above Wigan in the Betfred Women’s Super League table and kept them in contention for a coveted home play-off tie.

However, the victory came at a cost, as three key players – Lacey Owen, Emma Kershaw, and Kelsey Gentles – sustained injuries during the match and are unlikely to feature in Sunday’s game against Featherstone Rovers.

Tries from rising stars Lisa Parker and Izzy Brennan, alongside four goals from the latter, proved decisive for the Valkyrie. Despite falling behind early, York capitalized on their opportunities in the pouring rain to secure the win.

Director of Rugby Lindsay Anfield expressed concern over the injuries, particularly the serious shoulder and neck injury sustained by Kershaw after a dangerous tackle.

“Lacey will have to sit this week out,” Anfield confirmed. “Kelsey’s knee swelled up, so we’re going to rest her. And Emma got flipped upside down. It was reckless, unbelievably dangerous.”

The Valkyrie will also be without forward Jess Sharp, who is traveling to France with England’s DiSE (Diploma in Sporting Excellence) programme. Despite her absence, Anfield believes the experience will be beneficial for Sharp’s development.

Despite the injuries, the Valkyrie are confident of closing the points difference to second-placed Leeds Rhinos in their upcoming game against Featherstone, a team they have already dominated in previous encounters.
