Thu Sep 12 13:00:00 UTC 2024: ## Cornwall MPs Divided on Winter Fuel Allowance Cuts
Falmouth and Truro MP Jayne Kirkham has defended her decision to vote against a motion in parliament to keep the Winter Fuel Allowance for pensioners. The motion was defeated, with all four Cornwall Labour MPs voting against it and both Lib Dem Cornwall MPs, Andrew George and Ben Maguire, voting in favor.
Kirkham argued that the country’s finances were left in a dire state by the Conservatives, requiring the current government to take steps to restore financial stability. While acknowledging the impact on pensioners, she stressed the need for short-term measures to address the larger issue.
Lib Dem MP Andrew George criticized the cut, stating that it would impact around 10 million pensioners, including thousands in Cornwall. He argued that the government should focus on reversing inequality instead of extending it, suggesting alternative ways to address the budget deficit without affecting low-income households.
The government has extended the Household Support Fund to Cornwall, providing direct aid to those struggling with the cost of living. Additionally, organizations like Community Energy Plus and Citizens Advice Cornwall offer support. The Labour party highlights the Pension Credit, which is not claimed by 800,000 eligible people, and has been aligned with Housing Benefit to provide automatic support.
The debate reflects the growing concern over the cost of living crisis and the potential impact on vulnerable populations. While the government insists on addressing the financial deficit, the opposition raises concerns about the impact of cuts on low-income households, particularly pensioners.
