Thu Sep 12 07:16:00 UTC 2024: ## Gaming Giants Accused of Misleading Consumers in EU Complaint

The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) and 22 member organizations across Europe have filed a complaint against eight major video game companies, including Epic Games, Electronic Arts, and Roblox. The complaint, filed with the European Commission and the European Network of Consumer Authorities, alleges that these companies are misleading gamers into spending money on in-game purchases.

The complaint highlights concerns about the impact on children, who are particularly vulnerable to these practices. BEUC Director General Agustin Reyna stated, “Today, premium in-game currencies are purposefully tricking consumers and take a big toll on children. Companies are well aware of children’s vulnerability and use tricks to lure younger consumers into spending more.”

The BEUC points to numerous cases where consumers, especially children, are unable to see the true cost of in-game purchases, leading to overspending. The organization further criticizes the companies for denying consumers their rights when using premium in-game currencies.

The complaint calls for regulatory action, emphasizing the need for the gaming industry to abide by real-world consumer protection laws. The complaint targets eight gaming companies: Epic Games, Electronic Arts, Roblox, Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard, Mojang Studios, Supercell, Ubisoft, and Take-Two Interactive.
