Suhr, a devoted husband and father, left for work that morning as usual, bidding farewell to his wife, Nancy, and wishing his daughter, Briana, good luck on her first day of school. Little did he know that this would be their last goodbye.
The hijacked planes striking the Twin Towers prompted an immediate response from the FDNY, and Suhr, along with his fellow firefighters, raced to the scene. As he approached the South Tower, tragedy struck. A woman jumping from the building landed on Suhr, killing him instantly.

Though the woman’s actions were a tragic consequence of the unfolding tragedy, Nancy Suhr expressed no anger towards the jumper, understanding the desperation that drove her to such a desperate act. She emphasized that Suhr likely would have died anyway, as the South Tower collapsed just minutes later.
Despite the devastation, Suhr’s death likely saved the lives of many of his fellow firefighters who stopped their rescue efforts to help him.
Twenty-two years later, the memory of Daniel Suhr lives on. His family has continued to share his story, ensuring that his sacrifice is never forgotten. A book titled “Daniel Suhr: A Story of September 11th” was published in 2021 by his fire captain, Paul Conlon, further immortalizing his legacy.
