Thu Sep 12 00:29:31 UTC 2024: ## Smoke from Orange County Airport Fire Blankets Parts of San Diego

San Diego residents are experiencing hazy skies and smoky air due to the ongoing Orange County Airport Fire, according to the National Weather Service. The fire, which has consumed over 22,000 acres, has pushed smoke into the Inland Empire and northern San Diego County.

“Wind patterns are pushing the smoke north,” explained meteorologist Alex Tardy. “The smoke settles down to the ground at night and during the day it can spread further, similar to opening a window.”

The San Diego Air Pollution Control District issued a warning advising residents to monitor air quality and consider reducing outdoor activities. The agency recommends staying indoors with air conditioning to maintain clean air circulation.

Cal Fire San Diego is among the multiple agencies battling the Airport Fire, utilizing various resources including dozers, hand crews, fire engines, and water tenders.

“It’s a regional approach to try to keep these fires as small as we can, to keep them out of communities and protect as much life and property as we’re able to,” said CALFIRE Captain Mike Cornette.

The agency encourages residents to stay updated on fire information through fire.ca.gov. Despite cooler temperatures and higher humidity, vegetation is still exceptionally dry and fire conditions remain a concern. While cooler weather is aiding firefighters, the fire is expected to be fully contained by Friday.
