Megan Thee Stallion, the host of the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, paid tribute to Britney Spears’ iconic 2001 VMAs performance of “I’m a Slave 4 U” at the ceremony held at New York’s UBS Arena on Sept. 11.
The “WAP” rapper appeared on stage with a real snake, echoing Britney’s daring act that featured an albino Burmese python. However, Megan’s encounter with the reptile proved a little less glamorous, with her yelling “Stop the music!” and expressing her discomfort.
Megan’s experience mirrors Britney’s own account of the 2001 performance, where she revealed feeling stressed and terrified by the snake.
This snake-filled moment was just a taste of Megan’s hosting prowess. She is also slated to perform at the VMAs alongside a star-studded lineup that includes Sabrina Carpenter, Camilla Cabello, Shawn Mendes, Chappell Roan, and Halsey.
The night is particularly special for Megan, who is nominated for five awards including Song of the Summer for her collaboration with GloRilla, “Wanna Be.”
Despite this being her first time hosting the VMAs, Megan has a proven track record as a host, having previously appeared on “Saturday Night Live” and “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.”
Beyond the VMAs, Megan has had a successful year, releasing her third studio album “MEGAN” in June. The album, which reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200 chart, showcases Megan’s personal interests and growth as an artist.
