Pop star Sabrina Carpenter brought the heat to the 2024 VMAs with a sizzling, space-themed performance that saw her traverse the stage on a swing, share a passionate kiss with an alien, and deliver a powerful rendition of her hit singles.
Carpenter kicked off her set with “Please Please Please,” hanging from a swing next to a giant Moon Person, before descending to the main stage for a rendition of “Taste,” where she serenaded an astronaut and a blue alien, surprising the crowd with a prolonged kiss with the extraterrestrial. She concluded her performance with her chart-topping hit, “Espresso,” surrounded by a host of astronauts.
Carpenter, who is up for seven awards this year, including Song of the Year, Best Editing, and Song of the Summer, was introduced by Cyndi Lauper, who celebrated Carpenter’s successful album, “Short ‘n Sweet,” which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200.
This marks Carpenter’s first performance on the main VMA stage. The singer, who has enjoyed a massive year with the success of “Espresso” and “Please Please Please,” also released a playful video with Jenna Ortega for the album opener, “Taste.”
The 2024 VMAs, hosted at the UBS Arena in Long Island, saw a star-studded lineup of performers, including Carpenter, Camila Cabello, Anitta, Benson Boone, Halsey, Chappell Roan, Karol G, Rauw Alejandro, and Shawn Mendes. Taylor Swift leads the nominations list with ten nods, followed by Post Malone with nine, Ariana Grande and Eminem with six each, and Carpenter with her first VMA nominations.
