Thu Sep 12 13:07:00 UTC 2024: ## Kerala Chief Minister Mourns Loss of CPI(M) Leader Sitaram Yechury

**Thiruvananthapuram:** Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has expressed profound sadness over the passing of CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, calling him an “unparalleled leader of the communist movement” and his death an “irreparable loss to the nation, especially during this time of crisis.”

The Chief Minister, who was attending a program in Ernakulam when he received the news, cancelled his official engagements following the announcement of Yechury’s demise.

In a heartfelt message, Chief Minister Vijayan described Yechury as a “Marxist ideologue par excellence” who had led the CPI(M) through some of its most challenging periods.

He highlighted Yechury’s long and illustrious career, starting with his student activism during the National Emergency, where he led protests against Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He was elected President of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union for three consecutive terms, a feat unmatched till today.

Yechury’s commitment to the working class and marginalized communities was evident throughout his career, according to the Chief Minister. His contributions to drafting the Common Minimum Programme during the UPA I government and his advocacy for the rights of farmers and workers were particularly noteworthy.

Chief Minister Vijayan also underscored Yechury’s role in bringing political consensus on various issues, making him a true statesman. His dedication to India’s secular-federal character and his unwavering fight against the erosion of democratic principles were crucial, especially during the current political climate.

“Com. Sitaram’s departure is not just a deep personal loss, but a great loss to the Indian and international communist movements as well,” concluded Chief Minister Vijayan, offering his condolences to Yechury’s family, friends, and the CPI(M) members.
