Tampa Bay Rays reliever Edwin Uceta has been suspended for two games and fined after intentionally throwing at Philadelphia Phillies right fielder Nick Castellanos during Tuesday’s game. The incident, which occurred in the bottom of the eighth inning of the Phillies’ 9-4 victory, saw both dugouts and bullpens empty in a heated exchange at Citizens Bank Park.
In addition to Uceta’s suspension, Rays manager Kevin Cash was also handed a one-game suspension and a fine for his pitcher’s actions. Cash served his suspension on Wednesday.
Uceta’s suspension, initially set at three games, was reduced to two, allowing him to rejoin the Rays in Cleveland this Friday. The Rays will be without Uceta until then.
The suspensions have sparked debate among fans and analysts, with many questioning the rationale behind penalizing Cash for the actions of his pitcher. However, MLB officials maintained that the suspensions were issued in accordance with the league’s rules regarding intentional throwing.
