The popular BirguFest, which attracts over 60,000 visitors annually, has been cancelled for 2024 due to safety concerns related to ongoing renovation works in Vittoriosa’s main square. The festival, known for its mesmerizing candlelit streets and cultural events, was scheduled for October 11th and 12th.
Organizers announced the cancellation on the BirguFest Facebook page, citing advice from professionals and authorities. They emphasized that the health and safety of both residents and festival attendees was the primary concern, adding that the council wished to avoid further disruptions to the two-year renovation project.
The news was met with disappointment by many, with some expressing their understanding of the safety concerns while others questioned the rationale behind the cancellation. The main square was under renovation last year, and no incidents were reported, prompting some to argue that the works posed no imminent safety risks.
BirguFest, which originated as a celebration of Vittoriosa’s history and beauty under candlelight, was previously canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions. The festival is now expected to return in 2025.
