**New Delhi:** Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on the passing of Sitaram Yechury, the general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), who died on Thursday at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). Yechury, 72, had been hospitalized last week due to respiratory ailments.
In a post on X, Modi said, “Saddened by the passing away of Shri Sitaram Yechury ji. He was a leading light of the Left and was known for his ability to connect across the political spectrum. He also made a mark as an effective parliamentarian. My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this sad hour.”
Yechury, a veteran of the CPI(M) and a prominent political figure, was admitted to AIIMS on August 19 for a pneumonia-like chest infection. His condition had worsened in recent days, and he was being treated by a team of doctors.
The CPI(M) leader had faced personal tragedy in 2021 when his 35-year-old son, a journalist, succumbed to COVID-19. Yechury is survived by his wife, Seema Chishti, a veteran journalist, and two children: daughter Akhila and son Danish.
