The Indian government has announced a new initiative aimed at accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) across the country. The **”PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) Scheme”**, approved by the Union Cabinet, will provide a substantial boost to both EV buyers and the EV infrastructure.
The scheme, with a two-year budget of Rs 10,900 crore, will offer financial incentives for purchasing various electric vehicles, including two-wheelers, three-wheelers, buses, ambulances, and trucks. It will also invest heavily in setting up public charging stations across the country.
**Key Features of the PM E-DRIVE Scheme:**
* **Financial Incentives:** The scheme allocates Rs 3,679 crore towards subsidies for various EVs, including e-2 wheelers, e-3 wheelers, e-ambulances, e-trucks, and other EVs.
* **Focus on Public Transport:** A significant portion of the funding (Rs 4,391 crore) will be used to support the deployment of 14,028 e-buses in nine major cities with populations over 40 lakh. Priority will be given to replacing old, polluting vehicles with electric buses.
* **Electric Ambulance Initiative:** The scheme dedicates Rs 500 crore for the deployment of electric ambulances with enhanced patient transport comfort.
* **Promoting E-Trucks:** Rs 500 crore is allocated to encourage the adoption of electric trucks, with incentives available for those who scrap their older vehicles.
* **Public Charging Infrastructure:** A substantial investment of Rs 2,000 crore will be used to install 22,100 fast chargers for e-4Ws, 1,800 for e-buses, and 48,400 for e-2Ws and e-3Ws.
* **Upgrading Testing Agencies:** Rs 780 crore will be allocated to modernise testing agencies to accommodate the development and testing of new EV technologies.
**How it Works:**
Buyers will receive an Aadhaar-authenticated e-voucher through the scheme’s portal after purchasing an EV. This e-voucher can then be submitted to the dealer, who will upload it to the PM E-DRIVE portal. The buyer will receive confirmation via SMS.
The PM E-DRIVE scheme is expected to play a crucial role in accelerating India’s transition to a cleaner and more sustainable transportation system. The combination of financial incentives and investments in charging infrastructure is expected to significantly increase the adoption of EVs and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
