**Yeovil, Somerset:** Ben Horne, a 34-year-old aerospace engineer, has spoken out about the life-altering injuries he sustained after his dog chewed off parts of his face during a seizure. In 2019, Horne, who suffers from absence epilepsy, was experiencing seizures in his sleep after changing his medication. During one such episode, his dog Henry, distressed by the event, began to bite Horne’s nose, bottom lip, and part of his chin.
Horne, who was disoriented after regaining consciousness, discovered the extent of the damage when he saw blood and his reflection. He was rushed to the hospital where he underwent 10 hours of emergency surgery. “A nurse handed me a mirror and said ‘it’s going to be a big shock’. It definitely was,” Horne recalled. “Your whole life crumbles really. You’re not sure what you’re going to do or what’s going to happen.”
Since then, Horne has endured multiple reconstructive surgeries, including the use of skin from his forearm and bones from his ribs to rebuild his nose. Despite the challenges, Horne remains determined, completing two Tough Mudder events and preparing for another race this weekend.
Horne is currently fundraising for the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital team that has helped him through this ordeal. His dog, Henry, has been rehoused with a retired couple after a police assessment deemed him safe.
“It’s been a tough journey,” Horne admitted, “but I’m determined to make the most of it.” His story serves as a reminder of the importance of epilepsy awareness and the resilience of the human spirit.
