Thu Sep 12 01:08:03 UTC 2024: ## Oracle Bets Big on AI with $100 Billion Data Center Expansion

Oracle is making a massive investment in the data center market, pledging to spend over $100 billion in the next four years. This ambitious plan is fueled by the burgeoning demand for AI, with NVIDIA, the global leader in AI GPUs, receiving a hefty 40% of the investment.

Oracle chairman and CTO Larry Ellison revealed that the company currently operates 162 data centers worldwide, with more under construction. The largest of these facilities boasts an impressive 800 megawatts of power and will house sprawling NVIDIA GPU clusters designed to train massive AI models.

Ellison further hinted at future expansion, suggesting that Oracle could operate up to 2000 data centers in the coming years. He even went as far as disclosing plans to build a data center exceeding one gigawatt, powered by a staggering three small modular nuclear reactors.

This unprecedented investment emphasizes the immense potential of AI, which Ellison believes is entering a “frontier model” stage, requiring significant resources. He estimates that competitors entering this space will need to invest around $100 billion over the next four to five years.

While the focus remains on large-scale AI models, Ellison also highlighted the growing importance of specialized AI models. These models, often trained on specific data sets like medical images, are proving crucial in areas like cancer detection.

Ellison predicts that the next five to ten years will witness a fierce competition for AI supremacy, involving a limited number of companies and possibly even nation-states. He sees no signs of slowing down in this rapidly evolving field.
