Thu Sep 12 18:35:59 UTC 2024: ## Stoke-on-Trent School Sparks Outrage Over “Draconian” Footwear Policy

A Stoke-on-Trent mother is accusing Outwood Academy Danum of implementing a “draconian” footwear policy that left her daughter and other students confined to a classroom for hours on the first day of term.

Charlotte Byers claims her 13-year-old daughter, Lillyanne, was forced to stay in a room until she agreed to change her shoes because they featured a gold and black bow. This, despite the fact that the same shoes had been deemed acceptable by the school for the past two years.

Byers alleges that students who refused to change their footwear were kept in the designated room for up to four hours without access to a toilet, food, or drink.

“The school, who have no funding apparently, went out and bought a load of shoes,” Byers stated, “They made the girls wear shoes that were either too small or uncomfortable.”

The school, however, denies claims that students were “locked in.” In a statement, Outwood Academy Danum affirmed that the uniform policy had remained unchanged since the previous academic year. The policy, they assert, is “fair, equal, and affordable to all families.”

The school insists that students arriving in incorrect uniform are provided with loaner items. Parents are then notified so that they can ensure their child is properly outfitted in the future.

Byers, however, argues that the school’s new policy, prohibiting any detailing on shoes, was only communicated to parents the night before the start of term. She also expressed concerns that not all families can afford to purchase new footwear, particularly during the ongoing cost of living crisis.

“They should let it go for the school year and then do it next year with no exceptions – how hard is that?” she remarked.

The controversy has sparked outrage among parents and students alike, raising questions about the school’s approach to uniform enforcement and the potential impact on students’ well-being.
