Thu Sep 12 01:10:32 UTC 2024: ## Metro Schools Employees Embrace Spanish to Connect with Hispanic Students

**NASHVILLE, Tenn.** – In a move to bridge the communication gap and create a more inclusive environment, Metro Schools employees are flocking to free Spanish classes offered by Voces de Nashville. With Hispanic students making up 30% of the school system, the need for educators to communicate in Spanish is clear.

“There’s just a lack of belonging sometimes that can happen at school because of that language barrier,” said Becca Blank of Voces de Nashville. “Educators are awesome, and they’re always looking at how to bridge those gaps.”

The weekly classes, offered since 2022, have seen a surge in enrollment this year. The curriculum focuses on practical Spanish lessons that educators can apply in their daily interactions with students and families.

“Spanish is their first language, and sometimes it’s their only language,” explained Mary Brewer, a transition specialist at Johnson Alternative Learning Center. “We want to make sure our students feel like they’re part of the family.”

Recognizing the importance of communication for all facets of the school experience, Voces de Nashville will soon offer Spanish classes for Metro bus drivers, starting in October.

The organization encourages schools and individuals interested in getting involved to visit their website. Those interested in volunteering as teachers are also welcome.
