Thu Sep 12 13:07:00 UTC 2024: ## Border Closure Cripples Ganta-Guinea Trade Amidst St. John River Overflow
**Ganta, Liberia** – The Ganta-Guinea border has been brought to a standstill due to the overflowing St. John River, causing severe disruptions to trade, travel, and daily life. The flooding has rendered the border crossing impassable, stranding travelers and businesses on both sides.
The temporary border closure has severely impacted the livelihoods of many who rely on cross-border trade and services. Traders are unable to transport goods, while families are separated and unable to visit loved ones. The Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) is also facing financial losses as they are unable to collect taxes.
Local residents describe the situation as unprecedented, particularly the complete disruption on the Guinean side. Many rely on cross-border exchange for income, making it difficult to afford basic necessities such as food, school fees, and rent.
“We are really suffering,” expressed Mr. Francis Larmie, Chairman of the Ganta Money Exchangers Association. “There is no way to provide for our families, pay rent, or send our children to school since the schools reopened.”
Businesses along the border, including bars and restaurants, are also experiencing significant losses due to the lack of customers. Mrs. Marie Suah, a bar and restaurant owner, noted, “When the border is opened, we receive more customers, and business is good, but since Tuesday’s flood, we haven’t had any buyers.”
Travelers are also facing major inconveniences. Uriah Brooks, a stranded traveler, shared his frustration, “Since this morning we came with the intent to cross the border but there is no crossing point. The water is everywhere; all in the bushes and there is no way to cross. This will affect us if the water does not go down soon.”
The situation remains dire, with no clear indication of when the border will reopen. With today marking a typically busy market day for Guineans, it remains uncertain if cross-border traders will be able to resume their activities. Local authorities are working to maintain order on both sides of the border as the situation unfolds.
