The ongoing strike by junior doctors in West Bengal took a dramatic turn on Thursday as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee offered to resign in the pursuit of justice for the murdered doctor and the return of medical services. However, she accused the protesters of political motives, alleging they were seeking her removal rather than genuine justice.
The standoff began with a two-hour delay in talks between the protesting doctors and the chief minister at the state secretariat. The doctors, who have been on strike for over a month, refused to enter the auditorium for negotiations unless they were live-streamed. The government, citing the ongoing Supreme Court hearing and CBI investigation into the case, refused the demand.
Banerjee, in a press conference, expressed her willingness to step down, stating, “I am even willing to resign for the sake of the people… I want the people to get justice.” However, she also alleged the doctors were “politically motivated,” and that they wanted her “chair” rather than justice for the murdered doctor.
The doctors vehemently denied any such political agenda, stating that their focus remained on their five demands, including justice for the murdered doctor, action against those responsible for tampering with evidence, and a safe working environment for doctors.
The deadlock continues, with the doctors defying the Supreme Court’s order to return to work by Tuesday. They remain adamant in their demands and have refused to end the strike. The government, despite its conciliatory tone, appears resolute in its stance against live-streaming the talks.
This escalating situation has resulted in a severe disruption of healthcare services in West Bengal, with thousands of patients suffering due to the lack of medical attention. The political dimension of the protests adds further complexity to the situation, raising questions about the future of the strike and the path towards resolving the crisis.
