Thu Sep 12 00:28:35 UTC 2024: ## Jets Defense Under Fire After Week 1 Embarrassment

**New York, NY -** The New York Jets are facing scrutiny after a disappointing Week 1 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, where their defense faltered in a 32-19 defeat.

Defensive end Jermaine Johnson, who earned a Pro Bowl nod last season, described the performance as “not up to standard,” “not the norm,” and “not in the team’s character,” admitting the team was “embarrassed.”

The 49ers, despite missing star running back Christian McCaffrey, amassed 180 rushing yards, showcasing a strong running game that exposed weaknesses in the Jets’ defense. The team allowed eight consecutive scoring drives, a significant failing that raised concerns.

Johnson acknowledged the team’s need to improve, particularly in containing the run game. “As a unit, we definitely need to get off the field on third downs,” he said, “and I’d say the run game, we gotta set up edges not only on their D-line, but in the second and third levels.”

Coach Robert Saleh, while acknowledging the defensive shortcomings, emphasized that the team has the talent to perform better. He attributed the struggles to a lack of discipline, stating, “Felt like we got a little out of whack in that regard.”

Despite the Week 1 disappointment, the Jets have an opportunity to bounce back this week against the Tennessee Titans, a team that had its own offensive struggles in Week 1. However, if the defensive struggles continue, the Jets will need to look beyond simple “scheme and technique” adjustments, according to Johnson.

The focus for Johnson and the Jets defense is now on self-reflection and improvement. “The character of the guys we have in that locker room,” Johnson stated, “I get to watch film. I understand what I can fix, what I can do better to make sure that’s put to bed.”
