Thu Sep 12 00:10:11 UTC 2024: ## D.C. Certifies Presidential Election Results as “National Special Security Event”

**WASHINGTON, D.C. -** The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced Wednesday that the upcoming certification of the 2024 presidential election results on January 6, 2025, will be designated as a “National Special Security Event” (NSSE). This highest level of security designation will grant the event access to significant federal resources, as well as those from state and local partners.

“National Special Security Events are events of the highest national significance,” stated Eric Ranaghan, Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Secret Service’s Dignitary Protective Division. “The U.S. Secret Service, in collaboration with our federal, state, and local partners are committed to developing and implementing a comprehensive and integrated security plan to ensure the safety and security of this event and its participants.”

The designation, requested by Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, follows the violent attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, by supporters of former President Donald Trump, who sought to disrupt the certification of the 2020 election results. Hundreds of individuals have been prosecuted by the Justice Department for their involvement in the insurrection, and Special Counsel Jack Smith has brought criminal charges against Trump, who denies any wrongdoing.

While the certification on January 6, 2025, is a formality, the NSSE designation reflects the heightened security concerns surrounding the event. The Secret Service, in collaboration with local and federal agencies, will now implement a comprehensive plan to protect the Capitol, participants, and the city of Washington D.C.
