Thu Sep 12 19:36:00 UTC 2024: ## E-commerce Boom Fuels Delivery Hijacking Crisis in South Africa

**Johannesburg, South Africa** – The booming e-commerce sector in South Africa is facing a serious security crisis, with delivery trucks and vans becoming prime targets for hijacking syndicates. The surge in online shopping, fueled by the pandemic and the entry of international giants like Amazon, has led to a dramatic increase in deliveries, attracting criminals seeking to capitalize on the lucrative cargo.

Industry experts say delivery companies are spending exorbitant sums on security measures, including armed escorts for vehicles. “We are spending an absolute fortune on security, which kills our margins,” said Craig Pitchers, CEO of The Courier Guy, a leading delivery company.

The problem is exacerbated by the rising cost of fuel and the fact that delivery trucks and vans often carry high-value goods. According to Diederick Stopforth, commercial executive at SkyNet Worldwide Express, there are an estimated 20 to 25 delivery vehicle hijackings daily.

Delivery companies are now resorting to transporting valuable items in cash-in-transit vehicles, which are also becoming increasingly targeted by criminals. Regular bombings and highway shootouts are now a grim reality for this sector.

Despite the challenges, South Africa’s online retail sector continues to grow, with projections showing its share of total retail sales reaching 10% by 2026. The South African Police Service has acknowledged the crisis and has established dedicated task teams to combat the hijacking of delivery vehicles. Increased police presence on the roads is also being deployed to deter criminals.

The security crisis highlights the growing need for comprehensive solutions to protect both delivery drivers and valuable goods. The challenge for the industry is to find a balance between securing their operations and maintaining the efficiency of their delivery networks.
