**LAGOS, NIGERIA** – The Barge Operators Association of Nigeria (BOAN) has reported transporting a staggering four million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of cargo through imports and exports from 2019 to 2024. This represents a significant contribution to Nigeria’s maritime industry, according to BOAN President Olabunmi Olumekun.
Olumekun highlighted the association’s impact on job creation, with 82 member companies operating over 2,000 barges and tugboats, each employing an average of 13 crew members. Despite this success, BOAN faces several challenges, primarily stemming from government policies.
“One of the biggest challenges we face is government policies,” Olumekun stated, adding that the association was formed to regulate its members and ensure safety on waterways. This initiative stems from concerns about unqualified operators entering the industry, leading to incidents and accidents.
“We have a lot of quacks in the industry who do not know the industry,” Olumekun lamented, highlighting the importance of learning from past practices to improve safety and efficiency.
BOAN has also expressed concern over the N50 million bank bond imposed by the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) as a requirement for obtaining an operating license. The association believes this requirement is a major obstacle to the growth and development of the sector.
The BOAN’s success story underscores the potential of barge transportation in Nigeria, but the challenges they face highlight the need for government collaboration and supportive policies to ensure its continued growth and safety.
