Thu Sep 12 01:10:16 UTC 2024: ## Aussie Rugby Veteran O’Connor Exits Reds, Heads Overseas

**MELBOURNE -** Former Wallaby flyhalf James O’Connor has announced his departure from the Queensland Reds, turning down a contract extension to pursue opportunities abroad. The 34-year-old, who has had a turbulent but ultimately successful career, will be leaving the Reds after five seasons, during which he helped the club win the 2021 Super Rugby AU title.

O’Connor, known for his talent and occasional off-field indiscretions, revived his international career with the Reds under former coach Brad Thorn, earning a spot in the 2019 World Cup squad. He described his time with the Reds as “the highlight of my rugby career” and expressed gratitude for the growth he experienced both on and off the field.

His departure comes after a frustrating 2024 season marred by a persistent hamstring injury. Despite his injury struggles, O’Connor led his old club Brothers to victory in the state’s semi-professional championship.

Reds coach Les Kiss praised O’Connor’s contribution to the team, highlighting his influence on young players like Tom Lynagh and Harry McLaughlin-Phillips. While the club expressed disappointment at his departure, they respected his decision.

O’Connor’s overseas destination remains unconfirmed, but his departure marks the end of an era for the Queensland Reds and a new chapter for the veteran player.
