The 2024 MTV Video Music Awards kicked off with a distinctly Olympic theme, hosted by Megan Thee Stallion, who donned a gymnastics-inspired leotard and declared herself “repping Team VMA.” She also joked that VMA stands for “Voluptuous Megan Awards” and demanded a “gold medal for being a bad b*tch!”
The night’s first award, Best Collaboration, was presented by Flavor Flav and Olympic gymnast Jordan Chiles. However, before announcing the winner, Flav took the opportunity to address Chiles’ recent controversy. Chiles had initially won the bronze medal for individual floor at the 2024 Olympics, but it was controversially revoked and awarded to Romania’s Ana Barbosu.
In a gesture of support, Flav gifted Chiles a bedazzled pink clock necklace, proclaiming: “I know they tried to take your medal away from you… I got you something they can’t take away from you.” He also declared himself an “official sponsor for the United States Olympic Water Polo team” and claimed to have “your prize money, too.”
Earlier this year, Megan Thee Stallion had sent Chiles flowers before the Paris Olympics. Chiles went on to win the women’s team gold medal alongside her teammates.
Despite the controversy, the evening’s first award went to Post Malone and Taylor Swift for their collaboration “Fortnight.” The VMAs continued with a night full of music, spectacle, and an ongoing celebration of the Olympic spirit.
