**Warsaw, Poland** – A wave of surprise amnesties has brought a glimmer of hope to Belarusian political prisoners, including journalist Dmitry Luksha, who was released after spending nearly three years in prison for his reporting on the 2020 protests and Belarus’s involvement in the Ukraine war.
Luksha, who built up his muscles breaking rocks alongside convicted murderers and drug smugglers, was freed alongside his wife, Polina. The couple, along with dozens of other political prisoners, were unexpectedly released in recent weeks, prompting speculation about a potential shift in the authoritarian regime of Alexander Lukashenko.
Human rights organization Viasna estimates that 78 political detainees have been granted amnesty, many with serious health issues. While the criteria for release remain unclear, Lukashenko’s regime has presented the amnesties as a humane gesture, potentially seeking an image boost ahead of next year’s elections.
The releases have sparked hope amongst families of other high-profile detainees, particularly Maria Kolesnikova, a renowned classical flautist who became a symbol of the 2020 protests. Kolesnikova, sentenced to 11 years for conspiring to seize power, is reportedly in critical condition after losing significant weight and being denied proper medical care.
While the releases offer a ray of hope, concerns remain. Ryhor Astapenia, a Chatham House analyst on Belarus, believes the regime might be seeking a path to re-engage with the West, particularly given Russia’s continued involvement in the war in Ukraine. However, he also acknowledges the ongoing repression and the regime’s continued attacks on dissenters.
Despite the positive developments, there are still over 1,300 political prisoners remaining in Belarus. The release of Luksha and others has reignited calls for a more significant and comprehensive release of all political prisoners.
The situation in Belarus remains complex, with a delicate balance between hope for a potential thaw in the regime’s repressive policies and the grim reality of ongoing persecution. The international community is closely watching to see if these releases represent a genuine shift towards greater freedom or merely a calculated political maneuver.
