Rapper Eminem kicked off the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards with a performance of his new song “Houdini,” which pays homage to his iconic performance at the same show in 2000.
Dressed in a blonde wig, black tee, jeans, and a dog tag necklace, Eminem was joined onstage by hundreds of lookalikes, all sporting blonde wigs and matching outfits, as he performed “Houdini.” The song is nominated for both “Video of the Year” and “Best Hip-Hop Video.”
The performance was a direct callback to Eminem’s 2000 VMA performance of “The Real Slim Shady,” which featured an army of Slim Shadies. The 2000 performance was nominated this year for “Most Iconic” in VMA history, but lost to Katy Perry’s 2013 performance of “Roar.”
Eminem is nominated in six categories this year, including “Artist of the Year,” and is tied with Peter Gabriel for the most VMA wins in history. His last VMA opening act was in 2010, when he performed “Love the Way You Lie” with Rihanna.
