Fri Sep 13 06:47:54 UTC 2024: ## India’s Largest Health Insurance Scheme Expands to Cover All Senior Citizens

**New Delhi, September 13, 2024** – The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY), the world’s largest health insurance scheme, has announced a significant expansion to provide free health coverage to all senior citizens aged 70 and above.

This move, approved by the Union Cabinet this week, comes as India’s elderly population is set to double by 2050, increasing the demand for geriatric care. The scheme will benefit an estimated 4.5 crore families, including 6 crore senior citizens, providing them with up to Rs 5 lakh per family in health insurance coverage.

The expansion offers senior citizens a new distinct card for easy access to the scheme, as well as a choice of schemes, including the option for private insurance eligibility. Existing AB PM-JAY families with senior citizens will receive an additional top-up cover of up to Rs 5 lakh per year, while those not already covered will receive family coverage with a Rs 5 lakh annual limit.

The scheme further allows flexibility for senior citizens to opt for other public health insurance schemes, such as the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) or the Employees’ State Insurance scheme. Importantly, those already covered by private health insurance policies are also eligible to benefit from AB PM-JAY.

Launched in 2018, AB PM-JAY aims to provide universal health coverage, focusing on rural and vulnerable populations. The scheme promotes preventive care and health promotion, aiming to make healthcare more accessible and equitable. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare calls it a “comprehensive approach” towards a “more inclusive and efficient healthcare system,” set to transform India’s health sector by expanding access to quality healthcare, reducing financial burdens on families, and improving overall health outcomes.
