**NEW YORK -** Campbell Soup Co. is ready to shed its iconic “Soup” moniker and embrace a broader identity, the company announced at its annual investor meeting on Tuesday. The 155-year-old food giant, known for its canned soups, will now go by “Campbell’s Co.”
CEO Mark Clouse described the name change as “subtle yet important,” stating that it retains the company’s heritage while reflecting its diverse portfolio of brands, including Prego sauce, Goldfish crackers, and Rao’s pasta sauces – the latter acquired earlier this year for $2.7 billion.
The rebranding, which is subject to shareholder approval in November, isn’t unprecedented in the food industry. Companies like Dunkin’ and Krispy Kreme have also shed specific product mentions in favor of shorter, more versatile names.
Manoj Thomas, a marketing professor at Cornell University, believes the change is unlikely to affect consumer perception of Campbell’s and could signal a drive for further expansion and growth.
While Campbell’s takes a cue from other companies that have successfully rebranded, it’s important to note that tampering with iconic brands can also have unintended consequences. In recent years, KFC faced rumors about its chicken not being real following the shortening of its name.
