Thu Sep 12 00:52:00 UTC 2024: ## Junkanoo Dispute: Minister Opposes Valley Boys Ban, Fears Revenue Loss
**Nassau, Bahamas** – The ongoing dispute within the Valley Boys Junkanoo group has taken a new turn, with Youth Sports and Culture Minister Mario Bowleg expressing his opposition to the Junkanoo Corporation of New Providence’s (JCNP) decision to bar one faction from competing in the A category.
Bowleg voiced his concerns that the ruling could negatively impact turnout and revenue for the upcoming Junkanoo parades. “Junkanoo is there for the people,” he stated. “I believe both factions should have the opportunity to compete for a prize.” He emphasized the importance of maintaining the appeal of Junkanoo and attracting large crowds to Bay Street.
The JCNP, however, has maintained that only the “World Famous” faction led by Brian Adderley will be allowed to compete in the A category, while the “Way Forward” faction will participate as a fun group. Bjorn Ferguson, lawyer for the “Way Forward” faction, has vowed to challenge the decision, claiming the group deserves A category status given their funding and previous performance.
Minister Bowleg, while respecting the JCNP’s authority, believes the decision could harm ticket sales and overall revenue. “If less people come out to Bay Street because they want to see their group but can’t see them at their best, there will be less revenue,” he warned.
He expressed a desire to engage in open dialogue with the JCNP, hoping they would reconsider their decision.
The controversy stems from a split within the Valley Boys, with the Office of the Registrar General recognizing Brian Adderley’s faction as the legitimate holder of the Valley Boys name. Former Prime Minister Perry Christie, a founding member, had suggested an election to resolve the conflict, but his proposal was disregarded.
The debate has sparked mixed reactions, with some arguing that the breakaway group should operate under a different name and work their way up through the ranks, while others, including Minister Bowleg, fear the impact of excluding one faction on Junkanoo’s overall success.
