**OJO, LAGOS -** The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Lagos zone, staged a protest on Tuesday, urging Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to reinstate five lecturers dismissed from Lagos State University (LASU). The union claims the dismissals were unjust and that the Governing Council has exonerated the lecturers.
The protest, which involved members from various universities, including UNILAG, Kwara State University, and University of Ilorin, saw participants carrying placards with messages such as “Dear Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Dr. Tony Dansu’s Contributions to Education are Invaluable, Reinstate Him and Others” and “Recall the Sacked ASUU-LASU Five.”
The five ASUU-LASU executive members were dismissed between 2017 and 2019 by the previous Governing Council under former Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Lanre Fagbohun. They were accused of various charges, but the current Governing Council, under Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, has deemed the dismissals unjust and ordered their reinstatement in February 2022.
However, the reinstatement has been put on hold, allegedly due to directives from the state secretariat. ASUU alleges that Governor Sanwo-Olu is withholding the release of the Visitation Panel report, which completed its work in September 2022, to prevent the lecturers’ reinstatement.
Prof. Adelaja Odukoya, coordinator of ASUU Lagos zone, questioned the governor’s inaction, asking why the reinstated lecturers’ livelihoods are being denied. He also raised concerns about potential attempts to shield individuals implicated in the report.
ASUU is demanding Governor Sanwo-Olu release the White Paper on the visitation report and allow the reinstated lecturers to return to their posts.
