**ITANAGAR, Sept 11:** Arunachal Pradesh is poised for a significant economic boost as twelve hydropower projects, with a combined capacity of 12,500 MW, are set to commence operations within the next two years. This ambitious initiative, led by public sector undertakings like NHPC, NEEPCO, THDC, and SJVN, aims to meet the state’s power needs, contribute to national energy requirements, and foster rapid economic growth.
Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, while addressing the Solung festival celebrations at Roing, highlighted the multi-faceted benefits of these projects, emphasizing their contribution to tourism, employment generation, and overall economic development. These projects are expected to bring in an annual revenue of Rs 1,836 crore in equity shares, benefiting the state’s younger generation.
The government’s commitment extends beyond large dams, as they plan to develop small hydro projects in border villages, catering to remote areas and supporting defense personnel.
Furthermore, the construction of a 218-kilometer Assam-Arunachal railway line, passing through the sacred pilgrimage site of Parsuram Kund, is underway, signifying further progress in the state’s infrastructure development.
Meanwhile, a public hearing was held for the 2200 MW Oju hydroelectric project in Upper Subansiri district, where over 200 project-affected families participated, voicing their concerns and seeking clarifications from the project proponents. The hearing aimed to gather public input on the environmental impact assessment of the project, ensuring transparency and addressing concerns from the local community.
The development of these hydropower projects marks a significant step forward for Arunachal Pradesh, positioning the state as a key player in India’s energy landscape and unlocking a wide range of economic opportunities for the state and its people.
