Thu Sep 12 01:00:00 UTC 2024: ## “11 Rebels” to Open Tokyo International Film Festival, “Marcello Mio” to Close

The Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) has announced its opening and closing films for the upcoming 2023 edition. The festival, scheduled to run from October 28 to November 6, will kick off with the period thriller “11 Rebels,” directed by Shiraishi Kazuya.

The film, based on a screenplay by the late Kasahara Kazuo, features popular actors Yamada Takayuki and Nakano Taiga and tells the story of a suicide squad during the Boshin War, the fiercest war in Japanese history. Set to be distributed by Toei on November 1st, “11 Rebels” is a historical action drama that highlights the struggles of individuals caught in the crossfire of political upheavals.

“We expect this powerful film to mark a spectacular opening to the festival,” said Tokyo festival organizers.

The festival will close with the French-Italian comedy “Marcello Mio,” directed by Christophe Honore. The film, which premiered at Cannes in May, features Chiara Mastroianni, who plays a character that transforms into her real-life father, the legendary film director Marcello Mastroianni. “Marcello Mio” serves as a tribute to the late actor, blurring the line between reality and fiction with its innovative narrative.

“This is a unique film that serves as both an homage to Marcello Mastroianni and an experimental piece,” said Tokyo programming director Ichiyama Shozo.

The selection of these films, both reflecting historical and artistic themes, promises a diverse and compelling program for the 2023 Tokyo International Film Festival.
