**Shimla, Himachal Pradesh:** A major protest in the Sanjauli suburb of Shimla on Wednesday turned violent, resulting in clashes between police and demonstrators. The situation escalated when police resorted to lathi charge on the protesters, who in turn retaliated by throwing stones at the police personnel.
CCTV footage of the incident, released by the Shimla Police, shows the protesters hurling stones. Six police officers, including a woman, sustained injuries during the stone-throwing and scuffles. The woman officer reportedly suffered a back fracture.
Police have registered eight FIRs in connection with the incident. A strict prohibitory order (Section 163) was in place in the area, but protesters breached the barricades and entered the restricted zone.
Speaking to reporters, Shimla SP Sanjiv Kumar Gandhi stated that the police are investigating the matter thoroughly. Drone footage of the protest was also collected for further analysis. He assured that legal action will be taken against those responsible for the violence.
The protest was organized in opposition to the ongoing construction of a mosque in the area.
